  • Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was on Wednesday appointed as the Congress' General secretary in Uttar Pradesh East
  • The Rae Bareli seat, a stronghold of the Congress, is the constituency which is presently held by former party president Sonia Gandhi

On the very same day when Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made her official entry into politics and was inducted into the Congress' ranks, sources have told Republic TV that the grand old party has plans to field her as a candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

In a massive political scoop, it is suggested that the younger sibling of Congress President Rahul Gandhi could very well contest from Rae Bareli - a bastion of the Congress party and one of the two constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, along with Amethi, which the party won in 2014.

The Rae Bareli seat, a stronghold of the Congress, is the constituency which is presently held by former party president Sonia Gandhi. She has been at the helm of the Rae Bareli seat since 1999, but now, according to the sources, her daughter Priyanka will take over from her and contest the upcoming polls from the constituency.

Priyanka was on Wednesday appointed as the Congress' General secretary in Uttar Pradesh East as the party looked to deal with the setback of being sidelined by the 'Gathbandhan' of SP-BSP in their fight against the BJP.

Her journey as an official Congress party worker will begin from Februrary 1, the day she will take charge. The Congress supporters in Uttar Pradesh rejoiced their party's decision by making posters, in which she was compared to her grandmother and late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Right from party president to the party workers, each and every one of them is jubilant over Priyanka's decision to finally join politics. Rahul Gandhi had even tweeted about his excitement to work with Priyanka and Jyotiraditya Scindia, appointed as the General secretary of Uttar Pradesh West.

But for the BJP, the recent decision of the Congress party provided them the ammunition to up their ante on 'family politics'. A number of their party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, termed this move as yet another example of the Gandhis promoting the one-family culture.

"In this country, most political leaders belong to the Congress. They have been born and brought up in the Congress culture. When I talk about Congress-mukt Bharat, it means that in Indian politics, we are aiming to remove the Congress culture. In our party (BJP), not even a single decision is taken keeping in mind what the family of the politician wants. And for that very reason, it is said that in India, most families are the party. But in BJP, party is the family," he said while addressing the party workers in Nanded, Maharashtra.
