Power of Democracy: 103-year-old Chhattisgarh woman goes to vote in Maoists-targeted Dantewada

Soni Bai, a 103-year-old from Devarpalli in Chhattisgarh went to give her vote. The woman could not walk the distance and was supported by her son who carried her in his arms.

Democracy is in full swing in Chhattisgarh as the state went to its first phase of polls on Monday. One such incredible example was a woman of over 100 years of age celebrating democracy.

Soni Bai, a 103-year-old from Devarpalli in Chhattisgarh, went to give her vote. Being physically unable to walk the distance didn't stop her, as she was supported by her son who carried her in his arms.

Devarpalli is located in the Gorgunda village of Konta tehsil which is in the district of Dantewada. Dantewada is located within the so-called 'Red corridor', and has recently been witness to a number of Maoist attacks..

On October 30, three CRPF jawans and a Doordarshan journalist were killed in an ambush attack in Dantewada. The Doordarshan journalists were travelling to cover the state elections and were in the jungles of the Neelavaya Village where elections going to be held for the first time in decades.

PM Modi condemned the killing of DD journalist Achyutananda Sahu during his rally on November 9.

The first phase of the polls has been taking place in the state on Monday where 31,79,520 voters, including 16,21,839 males, 15,57,592 females and 89 of the third gender, will be voting in 4,336 booths.

A total of 65,000 security personnel, which includes paramilitary forces were assigned to safeguard 18 constituencies.

The BJP is the incumbent party in power with Raman Singh chief minister for three terms.  A day before the polls, Congress's state Vice President Ghanaram Sahu quit the party to join the party in power.
