Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in AIIMS on Monday after the latter was admitted to the premier medical institute for what is said to be a routine medical check-up.

PM Modi was at AIIMS for about 50 minutes after arriving there at about 7:45 pm.

The following statement was issued about the visit:

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, visited former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee at AIIMS today.

The Prime Minister interacted with family members of Shri Vajpayee. He also spoke to Doctors and inquired about the health of Shri Vajpayee.

After PM Modi left, former Deputy PM LK Advani and current Home Minister Rajnath Singh also visited. Earlier in the day, BJP party president Amit Shah and Congress president Rahul Gandhi had also visited.

As per AIIMS sources, the former Prime Minister has been admitted to the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (ICCU) at AIIMS and precautionary measures are being taken. Other tests are also being carried out. He is likely to spend the night at AIIMS.

Earlier, AIIMS had issued a statement on Vajpayee being admitted there, saying:

"Former Prime Minister Shri A.B. Vajpayee has been admitted in AIIMS today for examination and management. He is stable. A team of doctors under the supervision of Dr Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS are conducting tests."

Ninety-three-year-old Atal Bihari Vajpayee, apart from being the oldest living former Prime Minister of India, is also the only non-Congress PM to have completed a full term, between 1999 and 2004.
