With the alliance announcement, Mayawati-led BSP and Akhilesh Yadav-led SP started a three-way battle - BJP, Congress and SP-BSP gathbandhan in the upcoming polls in Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 members to Lok Sabha. Amid the political tension between the political parties and induction of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra into politics as general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East, Congress's ally NCP has told the party to not to go solo in Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming polls.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday, NCP MP Majeed Memon told Congress party to 'not ruin the efforts of millions of concerned Indians of throwing BJP out of power by contesting solo in U.P'. He went on to add that this will not only ruin anti-BJP votes but will also help BJP in retaining good number of seats.

While speaking to Republic TV over his tweet, senior NCP leader Majeed Memon, in a veiled suggestion, told Congress to come in alliance with the existing BSP-SP gathbandhan for the U.P polls which can ensure better chances of toppling down the ruling BJP from power.

"In one breathe Rahul Gandhi is saying we respect both of them(Mayawati-Akhilesh Yadav) and their togetherness, at the same time he says we would contest all 80 seats alone. See if you are contesting 80 seats even formally, you would certainly be taking some say a few thousand votes everywhere even if you can't win the seats and that would consequently advantage BJP. Huge population of India including people of U.P are almost determined to throw BJP out of power. So, this particular ambitions of all Mahagathbandhan components right from Farooq Abdullah to Stalin that we have to throw BJP out of power and the major role in that would be played by Uttar Pradesh where they have more than 70 sitting MPs," the NCP leader said.

On 12 January, the BSP and SP announced that they would fight the general elections together, both parties contesting 38 seats each. Subsequently, after being left out from the alliance, the Congress has started charting its own strategy of going solo in the upcoming general election in Uttar Pradesh.
