Rahul Gandhi changes designation on Twitter from Party President to member of Indian National Congress following his resignation

Following the announcement of his resignation, Rahul Gandhi changed the bio of his Twiter handle from the President of the Congress to a member of the Indian National Congress. Gandhi had announced his resignation via Twitter through a series of photos of his letter of resignation on 3 July at 3 PM. 

Previously, the bio on the official handle of the Congress leader read as the president of the Congress party, now reads 'member of the Indian National Congress'. The resignation drama began on May 25 post the humiliating defeat of the Congress in the hands of the BJP. Gandhi, who had been very adamant about his decision of stepping down as the Congress chief, had not made any announcement of stepping down despite repeated claims that he was ready to resign. 

The Congress had convened a meeting of its Lok Sabha members to evolve the party's strategy in the lower house of Parliament on Wednesday, July 3. 

Soon after the meeting, chaired by Congress Parliamentary Party leader Sonia Gandhi, started, some party MPs from Tamil Nadu urged him to reconsider his decision and wanted a resolution to be passed, sources said. All the party MPs then joined them and made a plea to Rahul, but he stuck to his decision, they said.

Earlier, Gandhi had reportedly expressed displeasure at the top Congress leaders for not sharing the responsibility of the defeat and resigning from their positions, following which Congress leaders from around the country flocked to meet Rahul Gandhi and convince him to stay on as president of the Congress party. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot recently announced in a flurry of tweets that the Chief Ministers of all Congress-ruled states assembled at Gandhi's residence to reassure their support for  Gandhi and to share the responsibility of the defeat. However, Gandhi stuck to his decision of stepping down from the position. 

The CWC, the highest decision-making body of the party, rejected his resignation and asked him to revamp and restructure the party at all levels instead. He had conveyed his decision at the meeting of the CWC on May 25.
