Amidst the curious question regarding the face of Mahagathbandhan and who will be projected as the Prime Minister candidate in their quest to oust BJP and PM Modi at the Centre, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader has proposed her party chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's name as the leader under whom the next government should be formed in New Delhi.

Speaking at the 21st Foundation Day of TMC, Abhishek Banerjee stated that the year 2019 is the year for a change, and it should come under the leadership of his party chief.

"The year of 2019 is a year of change and struggle. We should fight hard in order to ensure that we are able to gift the people of this country a secular and progressive India in New Delhi under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee," he said.

This latest development only adds to the confusion of who will lead the Mahagathbandhan from the front. For most parts, it seemed Congress President Rahul Gandhi, given his party's national significance, would be the face of the alliance. He even got an endorsement from DMK chief MK Stalin, who felt that Mr. Gandhi can become the PM.

But that suggestion was immediately dismissed by a number of other parties, including TMC, who stopped short of trusting Rahul Gandhi's credentials as the PM face of Mahagathabandhan.

The grand alliance has gained traction in the past few months keeping in mind the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu has been the driving force behind bringing all the opposition parties together to form the next government.

Prior to the recently concluded five-state elections, he had held a number of meetings with different parties. Right from having a detailed meeting with Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy and former PM Deve Gowda to holding conversations with Mamata, the TDP chief has left no stones unturned in making the grand alliance work.
