Rift In Bihar Coalition? Congress Wants FIR On RJD Minister For 'insulting' Ramcharitmanas

Congress is demanding an FIR against RJD leader and Bihar Education Minister Chandrashekhar who said that Shri Ramcharitmanas is a spreader of hate.

In what seems like a rift in Bihar's Mahagathbandhan, Congress is demanding an FIR against RJD leader and Bihar Education Minister Chandrashekhar for his controversial remarks on Ramcharitmanas. Acharya Pramod Krishnam, a prominent Congress leader and political advisor of Priyanka Vadra believes that Chandrashekhar must be booked for insulting the holy text by calling it a means of spreading hate.

While speaking at the 15th convocation ceremony of Nalanda Open University on Wednesday, Chandrashekhar said that the 'Shri Ramcharitmanas', 'Manusmriti' and M.S. Golwalkar's book 'Bunch of Thoughts' spread hate and promoted illiteracy among lower castes.

Taking to Twitter, Krishnam posted his complaint letter to the Director General Of Police in Uttar Pradesh urging him to file a case. In his letter, he also claimed that Chandrashekhar's statements has hurt the religious sentiments and demanded strict action against him.

This brings out another instance of cracks in the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) which includes seven political parties including Tejashwi Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Nitish Kumar Janata Dal United (JDU) and the Congress as the major ones. Earlier today, members from the BJP and JDU recited verses from the Ramcharitmanas outside a temple in Patna as a sign of protest against Chandrashekhar's remarks.

'Alliance does not allow hurting religious sentiments'

"I have demanded an FIR because Bihar's education minister has insulted Ramanyan. Shri Ramcharitmanas is the foundation of our faith and according to the Constitution of India no one is allowed to hurt anyone's sentiments," Krishnam said while speaking to Republic. "The Consitution does not allow this. And by calling Ramcharitmanas a spreader of hate, he (Chandrashekhar) has hurt the sentiments of crores of Hindus. This is a crime under the Indian Penal Code."

When asked about the Congress-RJD alliance in Bihar, Krishnam said that the alliance is limited to politics. "Politics and religion are two different things. An alliance in politics does not mean that you are allowed to hurt religious sentiments. I have contacted a lot of RJD leaders and many are hurting themselves. They also agree that the Education Minister must apologise," the Congress member said. He also stated that Chandrashekhar must be sacked if he is not willing to apologise.
