Even as Bihar Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi invited Nitish Kumar for swearing in at 10 am, RJD and Congress MLAs, led by Tejashwi Yadav, took out a midnight protest march against the move.
Following the dramatic protest, the Governor agreed to have a discussion with Tejashwi and five of RJD MLAs.
The Governor is believed to have told Tejashwi that he has already invited the JD(U) leaders and that he can't revoke the invite extended to Nitish to be sworn in as an NDA Chief Minister of Bihar.
"I've been defamed. People of Bihar are watching. Being the largest party we should have been invited [to form govt in Bihar], Lalu Yadav's son said.
Following suit, his brother Tej Pratap Yadav, took a jibe at Nitish. "He has sat in RSS' lap. It is betrayal of the mandate given by the people of Bihar."
Nitish Kumar is set to take oath as an NDA Bihar Chief Minister at 10 a.m. on Thursday. He would be sworn in with Sushil Kumar Modi who is set to become the Deputy Chief Minister.
Hours after alliance leader Lalu Prasad Yadav's warning and statement of "I made Nitish the Chief Minister", Nitish Kumar, on Wednesday, met Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and resigned from his post. The Governor, who was to visit Kolkata, canceled his trip after he got a call from the Chief Minister.
Nitish Kumar reportedly told his ministers, "'Samay aa gaya hain, humhe karna hain' (The time has come, we have to do this)."
Earlier, the Bihar unit of the BJP had said that it would offer unconditional support to the Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) in the State. “We are not in favour of mid-term elections in Bihar,” BJPs Sushil Kumar Modi said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to Twitter to congratulate Nitish Kumar on ‘joining the fight against corruption.’
"Congratulations to Nitish Kumar on joining the fight against corruption. 125 crore citizens welcome and support his honest move”, PM Modi said.
He added: "It is the need of the hour to rise above political differences and come together to fight against corruption for the development of the country, especially in Bihar."
Merely few minutes after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned from his post, RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav held a news briefing and attacked his alliance partner and accused him of political opportunism.
“I spoke to Nitish last night, he never asked for a resignation of Tejashwi” he said. The RJD supremo said that matters between the two parties were resolved after a conversation. “We had said that the Bihar JD(U) was not the CBI. We had clarified everything", Lalu said.
The RJD chief charged: "Nitish Kumar knew that he is an accused charged under Section 302; one of India's CM is main accused in murder & arms case."
Bihar unit of the BJP said that it would offer unconditional support to the Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) in the State. Responding to the BJP, Lalu said, “Nitish said he will never go to the BJP”.
