Following the Modi government's monumental decision to scrap Article 370 pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir in order to integrate the state with India like never before, which also saw J&K being bifurcated into two union territories - J&K and Ladakh - the latter region has welcomed its brand new status.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Ladakh parliamentarian Jamyang Tsering Namgyal gave a clear account of just how meaningful the move is for Ladakh. The 34-year-old BJP MP spoke on a number of decades-old issues that Ladakh had been facing because of Article 370, in a speech that was hailed by no less than the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.
On the ongoing debate:
"It's a historic day today. The mistakes of Jawaharlal Nehru are rectified by scrapping Article 370 and Ladakh welcomes this."
On those opposing the decision:
"The ones talking about Ladakh, don’t even know Ladakh. They did not consider us for seven long decades. They never even planted a seed there. How can we expect them to understand Ladakh?"
"How much do they know about its land, culture, people or geographical features? Do they know anything or are they just talking on the basis of a book they've read?"
On the Congress:
"For the past 71 years, Ladakh wanted to become an inseparable part of India. Because of Congress Ladakh’s development, political aspirations and even language has been affected."
On Ladakh's sacrifices for India:
"Every war that India has fought, Ladakh has always sacrificed. We are still ready to give our lives for this country"
On Kashmir's political dynasties:
"With the revoking of Article 370, just two political families will be affected but there will be development in Kashmir"
"Those Kashmiri politicians who say that J&K has problems are themselves part of the problem. They don't want democracy, but expect their pockets to be filled."
What Ladakh wants:
"Its a collective decision of people and all organizations that Ladakh should be made into a Union Territory. The people living in Ladakh have no demands except UT"
On the Article 370 myth:
"Those who are saying that there will be no equality after scrapping Article 370, I would like to ask them about the funds they acquire from state for J&K and Ladakh. But when it comes to development and allocation of funds, Ladakh has always been neglected. Thousands of jobs are created in the region, but Ladakh merely gets 10 jobs. Where is equality?"
"For the first time Ladakh’s aspirations and sentiments are being heard of. Ladakh open-heartedly thanks Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah."
Earlier on Tuesday Namgyal took to Facebook and uploaded a video of people celebrating in Ladakh. Watch the video here:
