Reports of major infighting inside the Congress party have emerged on Wednesday when heated argument reportedly took place between Congress MLA KK Sharma and Congress General Secretary UP (West) Jyotiraditya Scindia in a Congress review committee meeting chaired by Jyotiraditya Scindia and Raj Babbar on Tuesday. In the meeting, Sharma reportedly said that if you want to review the cause of loss then ask the top brass of the Congress party like Ghulam Nabi Azad, Ahmed Patel, and AK Antony. He also allegedly said to Scindia to ask them to resign.
Talking to reporters after the meeting, Sharma revealed the contents of the meeting saying while the local leaders had failed the real cause of failure was at the high level.
"He wanted to know why there was such a defeat during the elections. Frankly, I said that the lower leaders are definitely responsible for the loss, but the real reason for the loss is the high command which takes decisions. They don't meet with the right people and decide accordingly," he said.
Targetting Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad specifically, he added that Azad had reduced Congress' hold in Uttar Pradesh in the last 20 years as he took all wrong decisions as the state Congress in-charge.
"Ghulam Nabi is four-time experienced UP in-charge. He was previously in-charge in 1995 where we lost UP and now this time he was again made the leader in-charge and he reduced Congress to single digits in UP. People who have been sitting as incharge for 20 years doing nothing should be asked to step down. They don't even meet with the workers saying they have no time. I told Scindiaji that I cam to meet him multiple times and you did not meet me," he added.
Elaborating on Scindia's reaction to his allegations, he said that Scindia did not wish to listen to the truth.
"When I said that I have had good relation with your father, he (Scindia) said 'do not talk about any other third person in the meeting as it would amount to indiscipline. If it was indiscipline, then I don't wish to say anything. When he (Scindia) is not ready to listen to the truth, then I will leave. He(Scindia) said I won't tell you to leave, but your free to do so," he said.
Summing the Congress' failure to wrong decisions taken by Azad, he said that high command should take action against him.
"I wish to tell the media that I know Ghulam Nabi when he had nothing, and now he has started awarding ticket in exchange for money. He (Azad) takes wrong decisions and gives wrong tickets. Rahulji and the high command should take action against him. The Congress candidate for Ghaziabad who lost by 8.5 lakh votes, was chosen by Ghulam Nabi. They should question him about this," he added.
In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, as declared by the Election Commission, Uttar Pradesh had given the saffron party 62 seats, 11 less than the 2014 general elections, while the Congress had been confined to just one seat in Rae Bareli that the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi won. The Gathbandhan comprising of SP-BSP-RLD alliance that was claiming to prepare for the Prime Minister’s position has fallen on its face with SP getting 5 seats and BSP improving its tally of 0 to 10 seats from 2014.
The biggest upset in Uttar Pradesh for the Congress was Rahul Gandhi's Amethi loss to Smriti Irani. Post-results, Rahul Gandhi has offered to step down as Congress chief and the SP-BSP gathbandhan broke off deciding to fight on their own in the Assembly bypolls.
