More and more leaders are saying that Rajasthan's Deputy CM Sachin Pilot and Jyotiraditya Scindia must take over as the Congress president, sources said. Since Congress leader and Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh made an open call for a young gun from the party to take on the mantle as the party chief, more calls for the same are being made, the sources added. Earlier, the leaders were in favour of an old guard to step up as a stop gap until Gandhi family retains total control again, as per sources.

The sources have said that the Congress stands divided when it comes to choosing its next chief as the old guard from the party wants a senior leader and Congress loyalist to lead and the younger generation wants Pilot or Jyotiraditya Scindia to take over the post. Some are also in favour for Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Deb and Jitin Prasada. But most favour Pilot or Scindia. Three to four senior leaders such as Captain Amarinder Singh are rooting for young blood, the sources said. The Congress is stuck about making a decision on the matter until those who want young guns as chief have support of a dozen party members, the sources added.

The decision is likely to be taken on July 9 by the Congress Working Committee, sources said. Either Sushil Kumar Shinde or AK Anthony could be chosen as the next chief if old guard has its way and if younger crop have their say either Pilot or Scindia will become the next Congress president.

Despite Rahul Gandhi posting his four-page resignation letter as the party president on social media, most senior Congress leaders have continued to back him on as party chief. But Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday said urged a young leader from the party to replace Gandhi.

He is advocating that the party be led by a young leader and urged the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to find generation next leader as Gandhi's successor. He has said that, "Rahul had shown the way for youth leadership to take the party’s reins and steer it to greater heights," adding that, "...with India leading the world in terms of the largest youth population, it was natural that a young leader would understand and relate to the desires and aspirations of the people more effectively. Any change in the party leadership must reflect India’s societal reality, with 65% of its population under 35."

The Chief Minister said that Congress could be revived only a youth leader and such a leader could make the party "India's preferred and only choice."
