In a sensational political scoop, Republic TV has learnt that former Prime Minister of India HD Deve Gowda has initiated talks with Mayawati potentially over being a part of the Mahagathbandhan.

As per sources, while the JD(S) supremo is speaking to the BSP supremo, his son and Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy is in constant touch with Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

With the Congress and JD(S) confirming after their recent bypoll success that they will contest the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in a pre-poll alliance, according to sources, there are at least five parties that are a part of a common anti-BJP platform. Apart from the JD(S) and Congress, the other parties are the TDP, the JKNC and the AITC.

TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu has been meeting a number of leaders, including from this list to stitch together an anti-Modi front. He issued a news briefing alongside Sharad Pawar and NC patron Farooq Abdullah during his visit to Delhi last week, and shortly after that, met Congress president Rahul Gandhi, with the pair later announcing that they were joining forces in principle. Naidu will also meet with Deve Gowda on Thursday.

While Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has also often taken the lead in calling for a regional front, she hasn't been active in this effort recently, and particularly when it comes to the Congress being involved.

Two other parties that are also being spoken to in this endeavour are the NCP and the DMK. Andhra Pradesh CM Naidu will meet DMK chief Stalin on Friday.

As per sources, the Aam Aadmi Party (Kejriwal has met Naidu and Kumaraswamy in the last few months) and the CPI(M) will be spoken to at the end if required.

Mayawati holds special import to the Mahagathbandhan for a variety of reasons, the most notable being that her support base is considered to be 'transferrable'. This was said to be true in the bypolls she contested in alliance with the SP which was a successful move. She also allied with the JD(S) in the Karnataka Assembly elections, winning one seat. However, she memorably hit out at the Congress in September, making it clear at the time that she wasn't going to ally with Rahul Gandhi's party.
