Aaditya Thackeray on Monday, has reacted on the felling of over 2,700 trees in the Aarey forest. In a tweet, the Yuva Sena President, Aaditya Thackeray, called on the MMRCL to understand how the felling of trees would affect the Aarey ecosystem, which houses wildlife creatures like, leopards, spiders, rusty-spotted cats, orchids, and pythons.
Aaditya Thackeray's tweet comes after Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday sympathised with Shiv Senas' Yuva Sena President, Aaditya Thackeray's motives and called them "noble". Addressing a press conference in Pune, during the third phase of the BJP’s pre-poll, mega-outreach ‘Mahajanadesh Yatra’ campaign, he also advised Aaditya Thackeray to understand the true motives of some of the protestors.
Devendra Fadnavis said, “The Supreme Court has already said that the proposed area for the car depot in Aarey Colony is not any forest land or a place rich in biodiversity, but it is government land where permission can be given. It has also ruled out the feasibilty of any alternatives.”
Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray on September 10 had said that Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (MMRCL) stand on setting up a Metro car shed, post cutting trees in Aarey forest to be a move against the citizens of Mumbai.
Aaditya Thackeray tweeted on Tuesday explaining how the felling of trees will harm the ecosystem.
#AareyKaRe? #SaveAarey— Aaditya Thackeray (@AUThackeray) September 16, 2019
It’s not only about 2700 trees, it’s about an ecosystem- from leopards to spiders to orchids to pythons and rusty spotted cat. From endangered species to endemic species. It can’t be about one agency’s ego.
This little kid understands it, why not MMRCL? pic.twitter.com/L9lpgK4XQO
The MMRCL has planned to construct the Metro 3 car shed at Aarey and recently, the Tree Authority of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation gave them permission to cut over 2,600 trees, amid protest from citizens and political parties. Despite various protests, the BJP Government is firm on its stand of building the Metro 3 car shed on the Aarey land.
On September 7, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi had laid foundation stones of 3 new Metro lines in Mumbai and the Metro Bhavan, which will be built on Aarey land. While Shiv Sena and Aaditya Thackeray continue to protest over the felling of over 2,700 trees on the Aarey land, the Shiv Sena-ruled civic body has issued a letter to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited, allowing it to cut trees at the Aarey Colony to build its depot.
