BJP's Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj has stirred a controversy after meeting with a rape-accused MLA from his party in jail and calling him a popular leader.
MP Sakshi Maharaj on Wednesday met Kuldeep Sengar in Sitapur district jail to 'thank him' for the Lok Sabha elections results. He also called the rape-accused MLA a 'popular' leader.
Sengar, is a BJP MLA from Bangarmau in Unnao. He was arrested by the CBI in July, 2018 in a rape case.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, the Unnao MP defended his meeting with Sengar. He said that the MLA was popular locally and added that he met him to thank him and had in no way could help him with issues regarding staying in jail.
"Sengar is a successful and popular MLA from here. I wanted to thank him for the election results. I only came to meet him. His problems here and issues of comfort not my concerns and they are not under my control. I only came to meet him," he said.
The BJP MP's comment comes despite a warning from the Prime Minister himself to steer clear from controversial statements.
PM Narendra Modi on May 25, after being unanimously endorsed by his party MPs to lead them as the Prime Minister, gave a speech where he advised them to refrain from making controversial statements.
The Prime Minister had warned the MPs saying, "No matter how hard we work, one bad remark will undo all."
A minor had alleged in 2018 that BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar had raped by her at his residence in Unnao on June 4, 2017, where she had gone seeking a job. When the family complained, the victim's father was instead booked by the police under the Arms Act on April 3 earlier this year and put into jail on April 5. He later died in a hospital, with the postmortem report mentioning serious injuries on his body.
The CBI had arrested him after the agency charged him under section 120B, 363,366,376(1), 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POSCO) Act.
