Supriya Shrinate has been appointed as the new spokesperson of the Congress party on Saturday. The in-charge of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) Communications cell, Randeep Singh Surjewala revealed this information. He stated that the party president Sonia Gandhi had given her stamp of approval to the aforesaid appointment. Shrinate is a former Delhi-based journalist, who quit the position of Executive Director at the private English news channel ET NOW to join the Congress party earlier this year. She thanked the party leadership and expressed a desire to make a meaningful contribution.

Failed Lok Sabha attempt

Ahead of the 2019 General Elections, she entered the election fray from the Maharajganj Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. She is the daughter of the late Congress politician Harsh Vardhan, who had won the same seat in 2009. However, she was not the first candidate earmarked by the party. It had decided to give the ticket to Tanushree Tripathi, the daughter of jailed politician Amarmani Tripathi. Congress suffered considerable embarrassment as Shivpal Yadav's Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party-Lohia also named the same candidate to contest from Maharajganj. At this juncture, Shrinate got the opportunity to fight the election. Despite a spirited campaign that even involved the participation of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, she lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Pankaj Chaudhary by a huge margin.
