Irrigation Minister in Maharashtra government Girish Dattatray Mahajan on Tuesday said that Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil will join BJP on June 1. Patil met Mahajan at his residence on Tuesday, May 28.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Mahajan said: "After Narendra Modi's oath on May 30 as the Prime Minister of the country for the second time, Patil will join the BJP on June 1."
Following the embarrassing defeat of the Congress party in the state of Maharashtra, Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said that he had clarified to the party at the time of resigning from the position of Leader of Opposition that he will not campaign for the party. He also said that after his son Sujay Vikhe Patil joined the BJP, he had started thinking about the prospect of joining the party. He added that now many of the workers from the BJP have also urged Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil to join the party.
Speaking to media after meeting with Girish Mahajan, he said: "No MPs are in my contact. Sai Baba will do everything right."
In a major jolt to the Congress party in Maharashtra before the elections, son of Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil Sujay had joined the party. Following the incident, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil had resigned from the post of the Leader of Opposition. He sent his resignation letter to the Congress party's high-command in New Delhi.
During the election, Radhakrishna Vikhe campaigned for his son Sujay, who contested the polls from Ahmednagar on a BJP ticket. Sources said that there has been tremendous pressure from within the Congress party, on Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil - the MLA from Maharashtra's Shirdi constituency after his son jumped ship.
Joining the BJP in presence of Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Sujay Vikhe Patil had revealed his reason to quit the grand -old party. He had hailed the BJP for its developmental works. In the Lok Sabha election 2019, he won with a margin of 281474 votes against NCP's Sangram Arunkaka Jagtap.
"The way BJP has worked in Ahmednagar in the last five years has impressed me and I have decided that it’s best to work and help in the development of Ahmednagar and that’s why I had to take this tough decision. I know senior BJP cadre will always support me and guide me towards the development of Ahmednagar," Patil said while addressing the BJP leaders.
