TMC heavyweight MLA, Sabyasachi Dutta of Bidhannagar joins BJP

In a major blow but not a surprise in the political sphere of West Bengal Former Mayor Of Biddhanagar Municipal Corporation and heavyweight TMC MLA Sabyasachi Dutta joined BJP. The joining happened in the presence of Home Minister and BJP President Amit Shah in a seminar on the National Register of Citizens at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata. Sabyasachi Dutta was handed over the party flag by BJP state president Dilip Ghosh and was hugged by the national President.

"There were murmurs when Mukul Roy came to my house. I just greeted him as my guest. When Dilip Ghosh has tea with commoners, we will proud. The ones who are afraid of friendship, they are the ones come from some other planet", said the former Mayor of Bidhanagar after he was hugged by the Home Minister Amit at the NRC program in front of a full house.

Dutta who was has been spotted with Mukul Roy, another colleague who switched camp from TMC to BJP in 2017. Though there were speculations of Dutta joining the saffron party earlier, Dutta was tight-lipped on his plans. Mukul Roy has been instrumental in getting TMC leaders to switch to BJP in recent years. Former Mayor Of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Sovan Chatterjee had also switched over to BJP in August.

Resigned from mayorship in July

Dutta who is considered a heavyweight leader in Bidhannagar and Rajarhat area resigned from his post of Mayorship in July amidst rumors of him joining the saffron brigade then, praised the efforts of the Prime Minister to get India worldwide acknowledgment. He stated that India has achieved new heights under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Back when Dutta resigned, he said that the relation between him and the TMC had soured when he took part in a protest program of a labor union-backed by the party in the state-run power sector in Salt Lake on July 5 and criticized the state government for not fulfilling the longstanding demands for increase in salaries in the sector.

Sabyasachi Dutta Supports NRC

Taking a 360-degree different stand than his former party, TMC and party supremo, Mamata Banerjee, Sabyasachi spoke for implementation of NRC in Bengal. "Just like we sort out dead rice from the fresh ones, I request our mothers and sisters to sort it out in Bengal", said Dutta in relation to NRC in front of a house full of BJP supporters.
