Union Minister Smriti Irani and BJP MP from Amethi Smriti Irani made her debut in the Lower House of Parliament as she took the oath to office on Monday with the beginning of the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha.
As Smriti Irani's name was called in the Lok Sabha for oath-taking, she was greeted by thumping applause and loud cheers by her colleagues and rest of the Members of Parliament. From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Members of Parliament greeted the newly-appointed MP from Amethi, who defeated Congress president Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
As per reports, she received the longest applause as she took the oath a member of the 17th Lok Sabha. The MPs were seen enthusiastically thumping the desk for a long time.
In 2019, she defeated Rahul Gandhi from Amethi which is notably a key Congress bastion, by 55120 votes, in one of the biggest election stories in India's political history. In the Modi Cabinet 2.0, she has been appointed as the Union Minister of Women and Child Development. Previously, she was elected as a member of Rajya Sabha in 2011, and was re-elected to Rajya Sabha in 2017.
Besides Smriti Irani, PM Modi was also greeted with loud cheers as his name was called in the Lower House of the Parliament for the oath-taking ceremony. The MPs gave desk-thumping applauds for the Prime Minister with loud cheers of "Modi, Modi.." that could be heard all across the floor of the house.
The first session of 17th Lok Sabha commenced on Monday and will see the passing of the Union Budget and some key legislations like Triple Talaq bill being on top of the government agenda.
