BJP MP Dr Subramanian Swamy has issued a response to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi's criticism of Rahul Gandhi for inviting Pranab Mukherjee to his (Rahul Gandhi's) Iftar party just days after the former President of India delivered a speech at an RSS event.
Tweeting about the Iftar party, where Pranab Mukherjee was seen seated next to the Congress president, Owaisi had said that Mukherjee had "given a speech at the RSS head office, praised its founder and comfortable came to the Janeudhari Iftar party." He added, "if AIMIM contests elections, we are called communal but Rahul sharing a table with Pranab is normal and acceptable. Hypocrisy of the highest order."
To this, Dr Swamy said:
"Does Owaisi deny that he only speaks for Muslims. Has he ever said a word for Hindus? Has he ever spoken about the number of killings Aurangzeb did? Has he ever spoken about how many Temples were broken? (40,000, he says). When he doesn't speak about Hindus, is it not communal?
Stand up and say, 'Swamy is there to talk for Hindus, I'm there to talk for Muslims'... he should say something like that. But to say that Pranab Mukherjee is janaeudhari or someone is Hindu and call it communal like its a bad word. If someone calls me communal, I'll say that 82% people in the country are Hindus. So if I speak for 82%, how is it communal?"
On June 9, Owaisi had hit out at former President Pranab Mukherjee for his attendance and speech at the RSS headquarters. Addressing a gathering at the Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad, Owaisi had said, “Congress is finished.”
“Congress is finished. A man who spent 50 years in Congress and was President of India visited RSS headquarters. Do you still have hopes from this party?” said the AIMIM President.
