Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister Smriti Irani are all set to raise the poll pitch in Congress's bastion Amethi in Uttar Pradesh on Friday. While Rahul Gandhi is on a two-day tour on January 4-5 in his parliamentary constituency Amethi, Smriti Irani will be attending a programme organised by Raghav Sewa Sansthan.
When one hand BJP leader Smriti Irani has already landed in Uttar Pradesh for her visit, Rahul Gandhi deferred his tour timings due to the Rafale discussion in the Parliament on Friday.
Speaking to the reporters ahead of Rahul Gandhi's visit in his constituency in the northern state, Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani welcomed the Congress president, taking a dig at him for his rare visits in Amethi.
"We promised the people of Amethi in 2014 that Rahul Gandhi, who gives a visit once every five years, will pay more visits to the constituency. And now I am obliged that I could fulfill this promise. Seeing the developmental projects under the governance of Modiji and Yogi ji, Rahul ji was forced to come to Amethi. Amethi's sister and the family welcome Rahul Gandhi, the parliamentarian who shows his face to his people during the elections season only," Mrs Irani said.
The duo had contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2014 from Amethi, which was won by the Congress chief Rahul Gandhi. However, it was one of just two seats, the Congress won out of 80 in U.P, the other one be his mother Sonia Gandhi's win in Raebareli.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi will be attending an array of programmes during his two-day visit in Amethi. The Congress chief will meet the people of his constituency, attend public and party reception, hold 'corner meetings' in Salon and visit Pareshdepur, Naseerabad, Paraiya Namaskar and Gauriganj areas on Friday. He will also take part in the oath-taking ceremony of the Gauriganj Zila Adhivakta Sangh and inaugurate the Adhivakta Bhawan, built from the MPLAD funds. On Saturday, he will travel to Musafirkhana tehsil, Jagdishpur and Tiloyi, where he will meet the family members of late Shiv Pratap Singh, veteran Congress leader who died last week after a prolonged illness, before reaching Lucknow for his onward journey to Delhi.
Furthermore, this is the second time Smriti Irani is visiting Amethi in just the last two weeks. Even after losing to Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, the union textiles minister has maintained her contact with the constituency, nurturing it and visiting it frequently.
