Senior Congress leader and the party's in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir, Ambika Soni, has shed light on meeting that took place on Monday in former PM Manmohan Singh's residence, and has disclosed, in effect, that the Congress has begun its preparations for elections in the state.

Speaking to the media, even as Republic TV broke sensational details of a Congress strategy for J&K and a likely upcoming meeting between Sonia Gandhi and Mehbooba Mufti, Soni said that the Monday meeting, which was also attended by Ghulam Nabi Azad and P Chidambaram, was about the prevailing political situation in the state.

Soni said that the leaders resolved to make an outreach to the people of J&K over the next 2-3 months and communicate to them the policies implemented by the UPA 1 & 2. Members of the group would also go to Kargil and Leh after having visited Jammu and Srinagar in recent months.

She also confirmed Republic TV's newsbreak about a meeting that is to take place on Tuesday of the Congress' J&K MLAs and contributed that almost a hundred people will attend, including former MLAs, and the party's roadmap for elections will be chalked out.

"Governor's rule can't be implemented for very long. Let the elections happen fast", Ambika Soni said.

She refused to answer on whether there is an understanding with the PDP regarding forming a government in the state saying that she can't answer questions based on rumours. She offered that leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad have spoken about these matters.

Republic TV's sources, however, have confirmed that a meeting between Mehbooba Mufti and Sonia Gandhi is likely to take place in the next few days and that the Congress is approaching independent MLAs and small parties in the state.

The erstwhile Mehbooba Mufti-led government had fallen on June 19 after the BJP had withdrawn support to the alliance. Following that, Governor's rule has been imposed.
