Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took the oath to office as proceeding at the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha began in the Parliament House in New Delhi. 

As PM Modi's name was called in the Lower House of the Parliament for the oath-taking ceremony, the MPs gave desk-thumping applauds for the Prime Minister with loud cheers of "Modi, Modi.." could be heard all across the floor of the house. 

PM Modi, an MP from Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi Parliamentary constituency, took the oath after which he went to greet the protem speaker, Virendra Kumar. With folded hands, he then greeted the Parliament as he sat down on his seat besides BJP MP and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The first session of 17th Lok Sabha will see the passing of the Union Budget and some key legislations like Triple Talaq bill being on top of the government agenda.

Ahead of the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media outside the Parliament House.

Speaking on the importance of the role of the Opposition leaders in the Parliament, he asked them to not focus on the numbers and speak and actively participate in the house proceedings.

"I expect every group to debate and discussion on the issues which are in benefit for every individual. The role of an Opposition and an active Opposition is important in a Parliamentary democracy. The Opposition need not bother about their numbers. I hope they speak actively and participate in house proceedings. When we come to Parliament, we should forget Paksh and Vipaksh. We should think about issues with a ‘Nishpaksh spirit’ and work in the larger interest of the nation," he said.
