In an unprecedented incident, Congress leader DK Shivakumar has been detained by the Mumbai Police on Wednesday afternoon from outside the Renaissance - Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel, who was at the spot to meet the rebel Karnataka MLAs who had resigned earlier. Meanwhile, Section 144 was imposed in the area ahead of the incident. Along with DK Shivakumar, Milind Deora and other Congress leaders were also detained who were there to support him.
Following the detainment of DK Shivakumar, massive chaos erupted outside the hotel in Mumbai.
Taking to Twitter former Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora said that they have been taken to police custody for talking to media outside the hotel. "The way power is being misused is very shameful," said Deora in his tweet.
The political crisis over the resignation of Congress-JD(S) MLAs reached Mumbai on Wednesday morning, when the rebel MLAs arrived in a 5-star hotel in the financial capital city.
Massive showdown took place after Karnataka Minister of Irrigation and Congress leader DK Shivakumar reached the Renaissance hotel where the rebel 10 MLAs are staying amid heavy police presence.
However, ahead of DK Shivakumar's visit to the hotel, rebel MLAs had approached the Mumbai police in Powai, seeking protection. They wrote a letter expressing resentment in meeting DK Shivakumar, adding that they feel threatened by his visit. Through the letter they also sought police protection and urged the police to not allow him to enter the hotel premises.
Interestingly, in a bizarre twist, Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar found a positive outcome out of the chaos in Mumbai, suggesting that the adamant Congress leader DK Shivakumar is a suitable candidate for the Congress party president after he camped outside the Rennaisance hotel to meet the rebel JD(S)-Congress MLAs. Aiyar argued that Shivakumar possesses the bravery to teach Modi and his team a lesson.
