Om Birla, a BJP MP from the Kota-Bundi parliamentary constituency has been unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha in the Parliament on June 19. Birla's name was proposed by PM Narendra Modi himself for the post. Along with the NDA leaders, even the Congress party and Chandrababu Naidu's TDP gave their backing over his election.
Moments after Om Birla was selected as the Speaker of the Lower House of the Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised him and extended his best wishes. Highlighting that Birla has been in public life since his student days, the Prime Minister said that a person like him leading the house will help the MPS as well as the nation in large to deliver more and more.
"We are welcoming a person who has been in public life since student life. He has devoted his life to social service without any break. In BJP, he has been a part of the student's revolution. I got an opportunity to work with him since I have been working as a BJP worker for long. In Kota, he has done so many works. Kota is the 'Kashi of education' nowadays and this change in Kota has been because of Shreeman Om Birla ji," PM Modi said.
PM Modi also added his achievements and hard-work - saying that he had been working relentlessly during the earthquake in Kutch, and in Kedarnath during the disastrous floods. He also said that Birla has been serving people through many schemes like Paridhaan yojana and Prasadam yojana. The Prime Minister also tweeted about it.
"He worked during the Kota earthquake helping people without caring what or who is covering him. In Kedarnath, he worked for people. He runs a Yojana called Prasadam - it was his goal that no one will go hungry and thus the Yojana provides food to the needy. Similarly, there is Paridhaan yojana that provides clothes to those needy. He stayed in touch with society and has been serving people," PM added.
The Prime Minister also added his hopes for Om Birla's term as Speaker and said:
"He is such a sensible man. When such a man will discipline us and inspire us, then this house will give more and more to the country. He will be a catalyst agent. Jan Seva has been the focal point of the politics of Om Birla Ji. He is a compassionate leader who will preside over the sittings of the House. I believe he will do his work with all devotion. He smiles and talks softly. I am fearful that people don't misuse his down-to-earth behaviour."
