The political slugfest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress Party reached a new low when Mani Shankar Aiyar on Thursday referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "neech aadmi" (low-minded person) for appropriating Babasaheb Ambedkar into his election campaign for the imminent assembly polls in Gujarat.

However after the controversy drew flak from a lot of politicians and Rahul Gandhi himself, Mani Shankar Aiyar was forced to clarify his remarks.

While briefing the media he has said, “Yes, I used the word ‘neech’. I wanted to call him a 'low person' and in my understanding, low translates to ‘neech’ in Hindi.”

Aiyar is hardly a first-time offender when it comes to making crass attacks against the Prime Minister. A few years ago, on a visit to Pakistan, Aiyar had been caught on camera suggesting to Pakistani leaders to 'First get rid of Modi.'
