Condemning Congress MLA Nitesh Rane for throwing mud on a highway engineer, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Narayan Rane, on Thursday, has said that while the action was wrong, the protest was justified as the highway was kept shut for a long time.
"While Nitesh was staging a protest, some karyakartas threw muck at the civic officials. I apologize on behalf of them as throwing muck, hitting officials is wrong. But the highway has been kept shut for many days which has affected the nearby market, making people's lives difficult due to which Nitish was protesting. But the incident which happened in the protest is wrong," he said.
When asked whether he would make Nitesh apologize, Rane added that if the father is apologizing for no reason, of course, the son will. He also said that while media highlighted such events, they do not understand people's problems.
"I will tell my son to apologize. When the father is apologising without committing any mistake, then the son has to apologize. When such an incident occurs, you people highlight it but you do not understand the problems faced the people in his (Nitesh's) constituency," he added.
Defending Nitesh's protest, Rane said that Nitesh was not protesting for himself.
"Do you think he protested for himself? What does he gain by protesting? As he is the leader of the protest he is responsible for what his fellow workers did which was wrong," he said.
Earlier in the day, in yet another case of politicians versus citizens, Maharashtra Congress MLA Nitesh Rane, son of Narayan Rane had thrown mud on a highway engineer. The video accessed by Republic TV shows him and his followers dumping mud on highway engineer Prakash Shedekar. Nitesh Rane is a member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for the Kankavli constituency.
Sources have informed the Congress MLA's action came during an inspection of a highway along with the engineer. The inspection site as per reports is at the Mumbai-Goa highway at Kankavli. As the video proceeds, Rane can be seen as threatening highway officer and pulling highway officer from his collar.
As per reports, the reason for Narayan's son Nitesh and his supporters to do so is that the local administration was not repairing the potholes on the highway. This infuriated the Nitesh Rane and hence his supporters resorted to throwing mud on highway engineer and tightened him with rope. The MLA also hurled abuses on the govt official and tied him with a rope and threatened him.
This has been a continuing trend with famous politicians' sons abusing power. Earlier last week, BJP MP Kailash Vijayvargiya's son Akash Vijayvargiya used a cricket bat to thrash civic officials in Madhya Pradesh's Indore.
