Deepening the rift between Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, Sidhu was ominously absent in a cabinet review meeting of the Punjab Government on Thursday.
Visuals show that Sidhu who is the Minister of Local government, Tourism, Cultural Affairs and Museums in the ruling Punjab government, was absent from cabinet proceedings which were chaired by Captain Amarinder Singh.
Sidhu has been at loggerheads with the Punjab Chief Minister after he denied Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections. Accusing the SM of disrespecting women, she had called the Punjab chief minister 'Junior Captain'.
"I was denied ticket after our CM sa'ab & Asha Ji had specifically said that I can't win from Amritsar. My message was Captain sa'ab should respect women. You talk of women reservation, then consider them. When educated leaders like me, ready to serve others come, it's decent to tell us that someone's better so it's being done but don't deny our tickets by lying," she said.
Following this, Sidhu had stood by his wife attacking the CM in a veiled attack one day before the polls saying that 'a vote cannot be underestimated and it should be used to blast those who are colluding to backstab the Congress.
"You(voters) are set. You are the law. The world's biggest court is conscience. In a democracy, the voice of God is there. I said you(voters) are the law, court, justice. Do not underestimate a vote. Blast them ('Thok do') who are backstabbing the Congress by collusion," he said.
Retorting to Congress Leader Navjot Singh Sidhu's jibe on his wife's allegation of being denied a ticket, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Sunday has said that Sidhu's comments, one day prior to the election, will affect the Party and not him.
"If he is ambitious, then it is okay. I know him since his childhood. I have no difference of opinion with him. He probably wants to be Chief Minister and replace me, that's his business. But the timing of the statement, one day prior to the election, it was wrong. The consequence of this, if any, will affect the party not me," he said.
While the Punjab CM and Sidhu go a long way back, Punjab Lok Sabha election campaign was marred by many controversial attacks by Sidhu against PM Modi, Smriti Irani and later against Captain Amarinder Singh himself.
