Amid the ongoing conjectures over appointment of new Congress chief following the resignation of Rahul Gandhi from the post, senior party leader Sriprakash Jaiswal has batted for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for the post.
Speaking to media on Wednesday, the Congress leader said that Priyanka Gandhi can take charge as party President if Rahul Gandhi is not ready for the job. On being questioned over her charge as Uttar Pradesh Congress chief, Sriprakash Jaiswal added that even if Vadra has been given charge of UP, she can still be appointed as the party chief.
"If Rahul ji does not want to be the chief, then Priyanka ji can be made the chief. What is the problem in that? She has been given UP charge, but she can be made the national chief as well. If Rahul ji is not ready then, Priyanka can become the chief," the Congress leader said.
Interestingly, days after stepping down as Congress General Secretary, Jyotiraditya Scindia had also spoken in favour of a young and energetic leader to succeed Rahul Gandhi as party president. He said that immediate revival of the Congress is important and a young leader must lead the party on the pathway shown by the previous party president Rahul Gandhi.
"For sure there is a need for a young and energetic party president who will be able to take all Congress workers together and can communicate the energy throughout the country," said Scindia.
Besides Scindia, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has been strongly batting for a new young leader to carry forward the task Rahul Gandhi left taking responsibility for the defeat of the party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Similarly, veteran Congress leaders Karan Singh and Janardan Dwivedi have come out in support of a young Congress president over the old guard adding that if a decision was not taken immediately, the party would disintegrate.
