PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke about the health crisis in Bihar owing to the encephalitis outbreak which has claimed at least 200 lives so far during his reply to the 'Motion Of Thanks On the President's Address' in the Rajya Sabha.
"The deaths in Bihar due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome are unfortunate and a matter of shame for us. In the last 60 years, it us one of our biggest failures, we must take it seriously. We have to take this seriously. I am in constant touch with the state government and I am sure we will collectively come out of this crisis soon. We have to take this seriously. I am in constant touch with the state Govt and I am sure we will collectively come out of this crisis soon. There should be nutrition, vaccination and benefits of Ayushman Bharat provided to people. We must propagate more about the scheme to spread itsbenefit," he said.
The Nitish Kumar government has faced severe flak for its mismanagement and lack of accountability for the crisis. Both CM Kumar and Deputy CM Modi even brazenly evaded the media when it wanted to question on the health crisis in the state.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Bihar Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi met with Miss India 2019 Suman Rao even as the death toll touched 200.
Due to the inadequacy of the Bihar government in the treatment of the children, lack of nutrition and sanitation conditions in the hospitals, a Supreme Court bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and B R Gavai has directed the Bihar government to file an affidavit in the matter.
During the hearing, one of the lawyers informed the court that similar deaths had occurred earlier in Uttar Pradesh, news agency PTI reported.
Taking note of the same, the court has directed the Bihar government to file a response. Meanwhile, the matter has been posted for hearing after 10 days in the apex court.
