Just hours after Vice President Venkaiah Naidu rejected the Opposition's impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India (CJI), Congress party president Rahul Gandhi launched into a scorching attack at the Modi government, accusing it of destroying constitutional institutions.
Speaking at Talkatora stadium in New Delhi at his party's #SaveTheConstitution rally, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the Supreme Court is being trampled and suppressed ("kuchla ja raha hai, dabaya ja raha hai").
"Normally, people go to the judges for justice. For the first time, 4 Judges are asking for justice from the people. Supreme Court is being trampled and suppressed."
He added that this wasn't only true of the Supreme Court, accusing the BJP of appointing RSS ideologues to occupy important positions:
"Our institutions were gifted to us by our Constitution. Without the Constitution, there would be no IIT, IIM, Supreme Court, High Court, Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. The Modi Govt is now destroying these institutions by appointing RSS ideologues to occupy important positions."
He said that if he were to be allowed to speak in Parliament, he would embarrass the Prime Minister in 15 minutes:
"If I am allowed to speak for 15 minutes in Parliament, about Rafale and Nirav Modi, the Prime Minister will not be able to stand there."
Rahul Gandhi also launched an attack accusing the PM of being anti-Dalit:
"In his book 'Karmayog', PM Modi justifies manual scavenging by calling it a 'spiritual experience' for the Valmiki community. This speaks volumes about his anti-Dalit mindset."
"There is spirituality in making 'Pakodas', there is spirituality in cleaning the toilet. But Modi ji thinks only becoming the Prime Minister is spiritual."
Rahul Gandhi also cited the Unnao rape in his attack:
"First it was Beti bachao, Beti Padhao. Now it's just beti bachao, BJP MLA se bachao."
"Modiji is only interested in Modiji. How Narendra Modi became PM is a question the answer to which he knows. Let whatever atrocity happen. He only knows how to become Prime Minister."
He claimed that the image of the country abroad, about its plurality and inclusivity, had been 'ended', adding that the people of India will let PM Modi and the BJP know what they think of them in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections:
"In 70 years, the Congress party gave the country the Constitution and institutions. BJP and RSS will never protect the Constitution. And in the upcoming 2019 elections, the people of this country will tell PM Modi their 'Mann ki Baat'."
