Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD) party leader Sharad Yadav on Saturday made a massive goof up at West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's mega opposition rally when he inadvertently termed Bofors as a scam while trying to attack the BJP on Rafale.
During his address at an event which was the Opposition's 'show of unity' against PM Modi and BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Sharad Yadav referred to a newspaper's article on Rafale to mock BJP, but instead used Bofors as the name of the scam.
"Only yesterday in a newspaper, the Bofors scam was exposed. A prominent journalist of that newspaper yesterday exposed the scam which has been published in today's newspaper. At a time when soldiers of this country are giving their lives, this government did corruption in Bofors," he said.
During his address, the former president of JD(U) also lashed out at the BJP government over their decisions to implement demonetization and GST. He also expressed his gratitude to Mamata Banerjee for bringing the opposition together in the fight to defeat BJP.
The mega opposition rally, held at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, is the opposition's way of showing their unity against the present government at the Centre ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
The likes of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, former HD Deve Gowda, Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Karnataka CM's N Chandrababu Naidu, Arvind Kejriwal, HD Kumaraswamy, former chief ministers Omar Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's (DMK) MK Stalin were present at the event.
Though, three political bigwigs in Congres' Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi as well as BSP's Mayawati decided to skip the event, and instead send leaders from their party for the mega rally.
After snubbing the mega event, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, on Friday, wrote a letter to TMC chief Mamata Banerjee showing support to the unity of the opposition against the BJP-led government. In the letter, he had hoped to send a powerful message of a 'united India' to the country through this Opposition rally.
