Stirring a controversy while taking oath into the Lok Sabha on Tuesday - the second day of the 17th Lok Sabha's first session, SP Lok Sabha MP representing Sambhal constituency, Dr.Shafiqur Rahman Barq, refused to chant 'Vande Mataram' after reciting the pledge. He further claimed that 'Vande Mataram' was against Islam and hence he could not follow it.
"Constitution of India zindabad. Regarding chanting Vande Mataram, it is against Islam and I cannot follow it," he said after reciting his oath.
Visuals show Barq reciting his oath as per protocol. But before he proceeds to sign the register he added the above statement which is greeted by loud chants of 'Vande Mataram' from the other Lok Sabha MPs. In between the chants, he forgot to sign the register and was prompted by others for the same. Hamirpur Lok Sabha MP Anurag Thakur who is seen seated directly behind the podium is seen voicing his disapproval to Barq calling 'Vande Mataram' anti-Islam. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav is also seen seated during the entire incident.
Earlier in the day, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi was greeted by chants of 'Vande Mataram' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' as he took oath into the lower parliamentary house.
Amid the chants, Asaduddin Owaisi, who is a three-time Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Hyderabad constituency in Lok Sabha, took his oath as MP. As he finished his oath, he said, "Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Takbeer Allahu Akbar, Jai Hind", as a response.
Refusing to say 'Vande Mataram' has been a big issue during the poll campaign when many Islamic politicians refused to chant calling it anti-Islam. Previously in May, Barq had addressed media after defeating BJP candidate Parmeshwar Lal Saini by 2 lakh votes saying, " I don't follow Vande Mataram. This is no issue." He also stated that he will not sing Vande Mataram at the time of oath-taking.
Apart from Barq, AIMIM MLAs Imtiaz Jaleel and Waris Pathan had faced heat for refusing to say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' in Maharashtra assembly, following which Waris Pathan was suspended from the Assembly for the entire session. Again in 2017, the AIMIM leader was in the news for refusing to sing 'Vande Mataram'.
