Senior Congress leader and former Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has backed Congress' decision to induct Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's into politics and appoint her as the General secretary of Uttar Pradesh East.
Speaking exclusively to Republic TV, the veteran Congress politician lauded his party president Rahul Gandhi for the call, and was confident that Priyanka will deliver the goods for her party ahead of the crucial 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
"I compliment and thank Rahul Gandhi that he appointed Priyanka (Gandhi) the general secretary and in-charge of Uttar Pradesh (East). She knows UP very well. From 1998/99, when Sonia Gandhi was contesting election, she was in-charge of the area - Rae Bareli and Amethi. She knows most of the parts of the Uttar Pradesh and now.....such an experience politician will do best in the Congress party," he said.
When asked if the decision to induct Priyanka into politics shows the failure of Rahul Gandhi as the Congress president, just one year after he was appointed, the former Home Minister stated that isn't the case, and that the brother-sister duo have done well in the past, and will do so in the future as well.
"No, no (on Rahul Gandhi failing as Congress President). Both of them were working together (in past). Priyanka was not coming out, but now she has come out and it is perfect time that Priyanka has taken the decision to join as the general secretary of the AICC," Sushil Kumar Shinde added.
On Monday, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra plunged into politics after the Congress party appointed her as the General Secretary of Uttar Pradesh East, a role which she would take up from February 1.
This was one of the the number of decisions announced by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in its recent letter. Apart from the inclusion of Priyanka into politics, the party also made several key changes.
The other major decisions also taken by the Congress President were also stated in the letter. Senior party leader KC Venugopal was appointed as the general secretary of AICC (organisation), Jyotiraditya Scindia was appointed as the General secretary of Uttar Pradesh West, while Ghulam Nabi Azad was relieved from his post of General secretary of Uttar Pradesh.
