  • The bust of Vidyasagar, a 19th-century social reformer, was vandalized in the violent clashes during BJP chief Amit Shah's election rally in the state

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee unveiled the new statue of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar at the Vidyasagar college on Bidhan Sarani on Tuesday, after the old statue was vandalized during the violent clashes that had broken out during Amit Shah's rally in Kolkata shortly before the final phase of voting in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Mamata unveiled the statue and paid floral tribute to the educationalist and leader followed by other ministers and MLAs of the Trinamool government.

The bust of Vidyasagar, a 19th-century social reformer, was vandalized during the course of the May 14 roadshow by BJP president Amit Shah, amid widespread clashes that took place through the elections in the state.

According to the West Bengal Information and Cultural Department, the events related to re-installation of the bust were organized by the state's Higher Education and School Education Department in collaboration with the committee for the 200th birth anniversary of Vidyasagar.

BJP made huge gains in West Bengal in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, reducing the Trinamool's tally in the state from 36 to 22. Post the election results, Mamata launched a series of attacks on the BJP, blaming the party for the violence and accusing it of bringing people from outside the state to vitiate the law and order situation there.

On Monday, the Governor of West Bengal, Keshari Nath Tripathi, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and as per reports, submitted a report on the violence that has continued to be witnessed in the state, including the killings of the members of BJP and the Trinamool.
