In the budget announced on February 1, the Modi-led government announced:

  • Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme is motivated to provide small-scale farmers with 'structured, direct income support' so that they don't fall into the clutches of the money lenders.
  • Farmers with less than two hectares of land, the government will be providing income support of Rs. 6000 per year in instalments of Rs. 2000.
  • Piyush Goyal also said that PM Kisan scheme isn't limited to income support. It will help the farmer earn and live a respectable living
  • The Union Minister announced 2 per cent interest subvention to farmers pursuing animal husbandry and fisheries, and all farmers severely affected by severe natural calamities will get 2% interest subvention and additional 3% interest subvention upon timely repayment of crop loans.

Along with Congress president, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, too, denounced the budget calling it an 'economic emergency'. She has even claimed that the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sammaan Nidhi scheme for farmers where marginal and small farmers will receive Rs 6,000, a photocopy of the scheme by her government in West Bengal.

She said, "No one knows the financial situation of this country. This is an economic emergency. The government has no moral authority to place the budget now. This is absolutely valueless. This government doesn't have democracy's d and runs with emergency's e. This budget is a farce. I thought they will give away the black money but no not even that. They are only cheating people."
