Ahead of the Union Budget, education and policy experts and academicians are expecting a fair contribution for the education sector from Union Budget 2019. Experts have urged the government to dedicate 6 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the education sector.

The Indian education sector is one of the largest in the world but it still faces hurdles when it comes to fund allocation. The experts have put forth their demands for the education sector. Citing the upsurge in enrollment and number of institutes, the demand came in as a step that should be considered for an education reform that the government is targeting.

Experts have called for an increase in the allocation for education, as it has witnessed a decrease percentage-wise from 4.6% in 2014-15 to 2019-10 (interim budget). Some have also sought an increase in the outlay for higher education, and for factoring in education fields, whether social sciences, or STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) or Arts or Humanities, or any other depending on where there is a requirement in order to meet the needs and aspirations of the students.

Another expert who voiced his opinion for the budget's focus on the education sector opined on the need for equity to also be considered from the point of view of education access, particularly for the economically weaker sections, to enable them to also pursue higher education. Alongside this, there is a call to bolster the use of technology in education, especially by making it easier for startups to get in on the act.
