AAP Demands Government Accommodation For Arvind Kejriwal, Calls It 'His Right'
Earlier this week, Kejriwal resigned as the Chief Minister of Delhi and is expected to vacate his official residence within 15 days.
New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday called for government accommodation to be provided to outgoing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal , citing his entitlement as the national convener of a recognized national party.
During a press conference, AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha announced that the party would be formally requesting the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to allocate housing for Kejriwal. He expressed hope that the request would be approved within one or two days.
Earlier this week, Kejriwal resigned as the Chief Minister of Delhi and is expected to vacate his official residence within 15 days.
Chadha asserted that every national party is entitled to two key resources—a party office and accommodation for its leader—in Delhi. He noted that AAP achieved national party status after the 2022 Gujarat assembly elections, in which the party secured seats and a significant share of votes.
"After a two-year struggle and court intervention, the Centre provided AAP with an office in Delhi," Chadha said. The party recently moved to its new office on Ravi Shankar Shukla Lane, vacating its old premises on DDU Marg.
Chadha urged the Centre to follow existing rules without delay or political bias, stating, "It is Arvind Kejriwal 's right, as the national convener of AAP, to be granted government accommodation."
He pointed out that other national party leaders, such as BJP 's JP Nadda, Congress ' Mallikarjun Kharge, and BSP's Mayawati , have all been allocated government housing in the capital.
AAP’s national secretary will be submitting an official letter to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Chadha said, adding that he hoped the accommodation would be granted without any "politically motivated decisions."
Moreover, he stated that the request for government housing is a legal right of AAP, adding that the party had been fighting for this entitlement for a long time. Chadha also expressed hope that AAP would not need to pursue legal action to secure accommodation for Kejriwal.
Chadha reassured that Kejriwal would soon relinquish all official facilities provided to him as Chief Minister once his resignation is fully processed and a new CM takes office.
"He does not own any property or a house of his own," Chadha said, reiterating that Kejriwal is entitled to government accommodation as the leader of a national party and urging the Centre to provide it.
