The Tihar jail administration and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are embroiled in a heated exchange over the health condition of Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. AAP leaders claim Kejriwal is rapidly losing weight and his health is declining in prison, while jail authorities allege such claims aim to browbeat the prison administration.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh stated that Kejriwal weighed 70 kg at the time of his arrest and has since reduced to 61.5 kg, suggesting a serious ailment. However, the jail administration's records show Kejriwal's weight as 65 kg on April 1, 64 kg on May 10, 63.5 kg on June 2, and 61.5 kg currently. The prison's medical officer attributes the weight loss to reduced food intake.
The jail administration has assured that Kejriwal's health is being monitored closely, with regular checks on his blood pressure, blood sugar, and overall vitals. Despite claims of multiple drops in blood sugar levels, the jail report maintains that his vitals are within normal limits, and he receives treatment as necessary.
In contrast, AAP insists that Kejriwal's weight loss and fluctuating blood sugar levels are indicative of serious health risks. Sanjay Singh expressed concerns about potential coma or brain stroke due to low blood sugar levels, alleging a conspiracy by the BJP and the central government to jeopardize Kejriwal's health.
The BJP's Delhi unit leader Virendra Sachdeva dismissed these allegations, accusing AAP leaders of enacting a "drama" to mislead the court and secure bail for Kejriwal.
For the unversed, Delhi CM Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate in a corruption case linked to Delhi's now-scrapped liquor policy. He was briefly out on bail for campaigning during the Lok Sabha election before returning to Tihar jail.
