Srinagar: Amid rising concern about the new variant of COVID-19, Jammu and Kashmir has recorded its first case of COVID-19. The patient has been kept in home isolation as symptoms are not severe. His sample has been sent for testing of new variant. Speaking to Republic TV, Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal Government Medical College, said,"One case of COVID-19 has been reported and the samples have been sent for testing of new variant; there is nothing to worry as all the steps are being taken by the medical authorities."

Patient an elderly man with no travel history

"The patient is an elderly man with no travel history; though he has come in contact with a person who has a history of travelling abroad. The patient who has been tested COVID-19 positive has no comorbidity and is doing fine in home isolation. We have sent the sample for testing of new variant. Based on data, this new variant is spreading more but not fatal; we have to ensure that guards aren't lowered," Dr Ashutosh added.

Health authorites on toes

Jammu and Kashmir Health authorities have started contact tracing of the patient to trace out those who came in their contact in last one week.  Besides, J&K Government has also passed directions for proactive measures to ensure full preparedness to handle any potential scenarios.

J&K has already activated COVID-19 testing facilities and have conducted mock drills in health institutions and the data collected. Health Department has also reviewed the availability of medicines and other essential supplies in advance to ensure that everything is in place at the grassroots level.
