Amir Mahato Becomes Jharkhand's First Transgender Appointed as Community Health Officer
The Jharkhand Government has appointed Amir Mahato, a transgender individual as a Community Health Officer.
Jharkhand: In a groundbreaking move, the Jharkhand Government has appointed Amir Mahato, a transgender individual from the West Singhbhum district, as a Community Health Officer. On Thursday, Jharkhand's Chief Minister Hemant Soren handed over the appointment letter to Mahato.
Mahato shared that it was her mother's dream to become a nurse, but financial constraints prevented her from pursuing it. She stated, "My mother's dream has come true. I have no complaints to God. I am really happy and never thought I would be appointed as a Community Health Officer in Jharkhand. I thank the Chief Minister for taking such an initiative."
Despite coming from a very poor family, Mahato persevered and studied hard to achieve her goals. She completed her BSc and MSc in Nursing from Sambalpur University.
In addition to Jharkhand, other states like Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal have taken similar pioneering initiatives by appointing transgender individuals in government departments.
The Jharkhand Cabinet cleared the approval to reserve seats for transgender individuals in September last year. The state government has also introduced reservations under the OBC quota in educational institutions and government appointments for the third gender.
