Assam’s Rhino Population Surges from 600 to 3,000; Poaching Down by 86% Since 2016

This quote reminds us how everything in nature is connected, like the growing one-horned rhinoceros population in Assam . The state has seen a remarkable increase in rhinos, rising from 600 in the 1960s to over 3,000 in 2024, thanks to dedicated efforts to protect them.
Population Growth Driven by Conservation Efforts
Beyond Assam , 9% of the country’s total rhino population is located in Jaldapara National Park, 2% in Gorumara National Park in West Bengal, and 1% in Dudhwa National Park in Uttar Pradesh.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma credited the surge in rhino numbers to various conservation initiatives undertaken by the government. "Rhinos are synonymous with the identity of Assam . They are our pride and the crown jewel of our biodiversity. Ever since we assumed office, we have taken various initiatives to protect the prized species, expand its habitat and ensure its safety," Sarma stated on X.
The Chief Minister outlined the government's efforts towards rhino conservation, highlighting habitat expansion and restoration initiatives. "200.7 sq km has been added in Orang National Park and 195 sq km in Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary. In addition, 12.8 sq km of rhino habitat has been restored and freed from encroachment in the Laokhowa-Burachapori complex, facilitating the return of rhinos," he added.
Sarma also emphasized the collaborative efforts between the government and local communities to protect rhinos from poaching. " Assam 's rhinos are safer than ever. Since the Double Engine government took charge in 2016, poaching has dropped by 86%," he noted on X.
As conservation efforts continue, the future looks promising for the one-horned rhinoceros, a vital part of Assam 's rich biodiversity.
