Baba Siddique Murder: Republic Accesses First Visuals of Suspect As Police Probe Motive
Baba Siddique, senior NCP leader, was shot dead by unidentified suspects in Mumbai's Bandra on Saturday evening. Police is probing the motive behind it.
Baba Siddique Murder: Senior leader of the Ajit Pawar -led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Baba Siddique was shot dead in Mumbai on Saturday evening by unidentified persons. Siddique was shot multiple times outside his MLA son's Zeeshan Siddique's office in Bandra east. The Mumbai police has so far arrested two suspects while third one is still out at large. Republic TV has accessed the photo of one of the suspects.
Timeline of attack on Baba Siddique
- Baba Siddique left the office between 9:15 pm to 9:20 pm. He was firing crackers near his office when attacked.
- While bursting crackers, suddenly three people got out of the vehicle.
- These three people came with handkerchiefs tied on their faces. They then fired three rounds at Baba Siddique.
- The firing took place near the Ram Mandir near Baba Siddique's office. he fell down after being shot in the chest.
- He was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital.
- As soon as the police received the information, the police entered the spot.
Siddique, a Congressman who switched to NCP
Siddique (66), a former Congressman, was admitted at the Lilavati Hospital but succumbed to the injuries.
He was attacked outside his MLA son Zeeshan Siddiqui's office near Colgate ground in Nirmal Nagar, Bandra East, police said.
Baba Siddique had represented Bandra (West) seat three times in the assembly. A prominent Muslim leader from Mumbai, Siddique was also known be close to several Bollywood stars.
In a condolence message on X, deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar described the attack as extremely unfortunate and condemnable.
"I was shocked on learning that he died in this incident," Pawar said, adding that he had lost a good friend and colleague.
"We have lost a leader who fought for the minority community and championed secularism," he said, adding that a thorough probe would be conducted into the attack.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said earlier that Mumbai police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar had told him that two alleged shooters have been taken into custody.
One of them is from Uttar Pradesh and the other from Haryana , while a third accused fled from the spot, the CM told TV channels.
Congress says serious indictment of crumbling law and order
The Congress on Saturday said the killing of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Baba Siddique is a serious indictment of the "crumbling" law and order situation in Maharashtra and demanded a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
Former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique was shot dead by three men in Mumbai's Bandra area on Saturday. Two of the assailants have been arrested, according to officials.
The shocking incident prompted the opposition to question the law and order situation in the state, where assembly elections are expected to be held next month.
In a post on X, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the tragic demise of Siddique is shocking beyond words.
"In this hour of grief, I offer my deepest condolences to his family, friends and supporters," he said.
"Justice must be ensured, and the present Maharashtra Govt must order a thorough and transparent investigation. The culprits must be brought to book at the earliest. Accountability is paramount," Kharge said.
