Ahmedabad: In a shocking incident, a Class X student failed his board exams because teachers miscalculated the marks while tallying, leading to a loss of 30 marks.

The student who had applied for the recheck got to know about the revised result when Gujarat State Education Board admitted that teachers have wrongly calculated the marks. 

Student Fails Board Exams After Teacher's Miscalculated Marks

The teachers responsible for miscalculating student’s marks will have to pay fine of Rs 64 lakh, a GSEB official said. 

According to GSEB officials, more than 100 teachers this year have miscalculated the marks of the students while calculating their papers. 

In Gujarat , the marks matter to the students as admission to diploma courses is based on the merit determined by Class 10 and 12 board exam results. As a result, thousands of students seek reassessment of their papers in hopes of improving their scores, particularly in subjects like mathematics and science.

Bharat Patel, president of the Gujarat Higher Secondary Teachers’ Association, stated that the 30-mark error was made by a mathematics teacher who overlooked a digit while totaling the scores. 

"In total, 1,654 teachers who graded Class 10 papers have been collectively fined Rs 20 lakh for various mistakes," he added.

He further added that 1,654 teachers who graded Class 10 papers have been collectively fined Rs 20 lakh for various errors, with each mistake resulting in a Rs 100 fine for every mark. 

Additionally, 1,404 paper checkers for the Class 12 general stream faced fines totaling Rs 24.31 lakh, while 1,430 paper checkers for the Class 12 science stream were fined Rs 19.66 lakh.
