Kolkata: Actor and BJP leader Roopa Ganguly was arrested in Kolkata after a night-long protest and taken to the police headquarters in Lalbazar on Thursday.

Ganguly, along with other BJP leaders, was demonstrating following the tragic death of a schoolboy who was struck by an excavator in the Bansdroni area of Kolkata.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning when a class 9 student was killed by the excavator, according to police reports.

In the aftermath, local residents initiated protests, which drew in opposition leaders who argued that the poor condition of the road, long overdue for repairs, played a significant role in the tragedy. They also criticized the police for their alleged delayed response.

Some protesters vandalized the excavator involved in the incident and confronted a senior police officer, demanding the presence of the local councillor and MLA. They labeled the boy's death a "state-sponsored murder," highlighting the deteriorating road conditions in the area.
