'Kerala Was Warned 7 Days Before', Says Amit Shah in Lok Sabha

Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah says, "... Under this early warning system, on July 23, at my direction, 9 NDRF teams were sent to Kerala considering that there could be landslides... What did the Kerala government do? Were the people shifted? And if they were shifted then how did they die?... The project of early warning started in 2016 and by 2023, India had the most modern early warning system... There are only 4 countries to predict 7 days in advance and India is one amongst them..."

 Based on the request from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), the Southern Naval Command dispatched a disaster relief team of 68 personnel from INS Zamorin at Ezhimala to the landslide-affected site at 1430 hours on 30th July. The rescue team comprising skilled personnel along with medical team and necessary equipment reached the site at 2200h on 30th July. Additional teams have been kept standby for deployment at short notice and will be mobilised as required.  An ALH detachment in SAR configuration was deployed from Kochi to Calicut at 0730h on 31 Jul 24 to augment the rescue efforts. The adverse weather conditions due to incessant rains poses challenges in the area. All out efforts are underway to provide immediate relief and support to the local populace impacted by the disaster.

A victim of Wayanad landslide says, “ I stay alone at my home, at night I felt like my bed is shaking and heard loud noises…I tried to call my neighbours but nobody picked up the phone…I called my son who stays in Coimbatore and he asked me to climb on top of the house and stay there. I couldn’t open the door as it was jammed. I yelled for help…after sometime people came and broke the door with an axe and rescued me…when the second landslide came, my house also got swept away. My relatives stayed in Mundakkai. They all died, 2 of their bodies have been recovered, rest 6-7 are missing. Now I don’t have a home, or land and can’t go for a job either. I won’t be able to build a home. I don’t know what to do”

In view of the disaster and incessant rainfall, all educational institutions will remain closed on Wednesday, July 31. A holiday has also been declared in 11 districts - Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Idukki, Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta, reported Onmanorama.
