Kolkata: The West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, plans to introduce a bill, and pass it in 10 days to mandate capital punishment for rapists.

Mamata Banerjee said, "Next week, we will convene an Assembly session and aim to pass a Bill within 10 days to ensure that rapists receive the death penalty."

She also took a dig at Governor CV Ananda Bose stating “We will then send this Bill to the Governor. If he refuses to pass it, we will protest outside Raj Bhavan. This Bill must be enacted, and the Governor cannot evade responsibility this time.”

Mamata was addressing a rally at the 27th Foundation Day of West Bengal Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the student wing of TMC, alongside her nephew and TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, where she accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of orchestrating a conspiracy to tarnish West Bengal’s image in connection with the case.

Her statement came after the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

"The BJP is attempting to defame Bengal and engage in dirty politics regarding the death of the trainee doctor," she charged.

“The BJP is trying to defame Bengal and is doing dirty politics over the death of the trainee doctor,” she alleged.

BJP's Call for Bandh on Nabanna Police Action

The statement came amid BJP's 12-hour Bengal Bandh, which was called to protest against police action during the 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally to seek justice for RG Kar rape and murder victim in the state capital on Tuesday.

The march to state secretariat Nabanna in Howrah was organised by the newly-formed students' group Chatra Samaj, demanding the resignation of CM Mamata Banerjee over the rape and murder of the doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital
