New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed a Delhi High Court order that had granted divorce to celebrity chef Kunal Kapur on grounds of cruelty by his estranged wife. The apex court has issued a notice to Kapur following a plea filed by his wife and referred the case to the Supreme Court Mediation Centre to explore the possibility of settlement.
The Delhi High Court had previously granted Kapur a divorce, citing his wife's conduct as lacking dignity and empathy. The court had allowed Kapur's appeal, overturning a family court's decision that had denied him a divorce. The High Court concluded that making reckless, defamatory, and humiliating allegations against a spouse in public constituted cruelty.
The High Court emphasized that the conduct of the wife towards Kapur was devoid of dignity and empathy, thus undermining the essence of marriage. It stated that enduring such behavior justified the granting of a divorce.
Kapur and his estranged wife were married in April 2008 and have a son born in 2012. Kapur, known for his role as a judge on "MasterChef India," had accused his wife of showing disrespect towards his parents and humiliating him. Conversely, the wife claimed that Kapur's allegations were false and that she had always tried to maintain a loving relationship. She argued that Kapur fabricated stories to obtain the divorce.
