Raipur: In a tragic incident in Chhattisgarh, a three-year-old girl died after she consumed alcohol by mistaking it for water in Balrampur district. The deceased has been identified as Sarita.

According to sources, the incident took place when the girl went inside her grandmother's room and picked up a liquor bottle from a table and drank it assuming it to be water. Soon after consuming the liquor, she fell unconscious. She was then rushed to hospital where she died during treatment.

It is learnt that Sarita was playing at home while her mother was occupied with household chores when she entered the room of her granny where a bottle containing mahua drink was kept on the table.

The girl started feeling dizzy after consuming liquor and told her mother that she wanted to have a bath, but before her mother could understand anything, the little girl fell unconscious.

After smelling mahua from her mouth, her mother went inside the room where the alcohol was kept and found mahua spits on the floor.

The girl's parents rushed her to hospital where she was further referred to neighbouring Ambikapur hospital. The girl was hospitalised on Monday and she succumbed on Tuesday after her condition worsened.

Police have launched a probe into the death. The body of the child was  handed over her parents after autopsy.
