Class 9 Kolkata Student Hit by JCB Vehicle During Road Repair Work, Dies

Kolkata: A Class 9 boy was killed after he was knocked down by a excavator while he was on his way to tuition classes in Kolkata's Bansdroni area said police. The incident is said to have taken place near the Dinesh Nagar auto stand on Wednesday. 

Despite local residents taking the boy to Bangur Hospital in Tollygunge, he was declared dead upon arrival by doctors.  Soon after the accident, the driver of the excavator fled the scene, and police were actively working to locate him.

Later in the afternoon, the DC of South Suburban Division Bansdroni, Bidisha Kalita, inspected the spot where mishap took place. DC Kalita said the minor died in an accident with a JCB vehicle.

DC Bidisha Kalita said, “It was reported that a boy died in an accident with a JCB vehicle. A case has been registered but there was a ruckus in the area over this... At present, efforts are being made to bring the law and order under control. Video footage is being seen and action will be taken accordingly.” 

Police have registered a case in this regard. CCTV footage were being scanned as a part of the probe. So far no arrests have been made. An investigation into the minor's death is underway. 

The tragic incident led to protests and a tense atmosphere prevailed in the area. The incident also triggered a political tussle, with allegations being raised against the local councilor, Anita Kar Majumdar, for her “absence” during the crisis. Meanwhile The BJP said that a woman leader, Ruby Mondal, who was also a part of the protests, was detained by the police “without any apparent reason.”
