Cop shoots himself with Insas rifle in Delhi
DCP Pranav Tayal identified the deceased as Ajay Kumar Chaudhary (35), who hailed from Jaipur, Rajasthan. He was posted at TML, since June 12, last year.
A 35-year-old Delhi Police constable ended his life by shooting himself with an Insas rifle, while performing duty in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area. The incident took place on Wednesday evening, when other police personnel were present in nearby barracks.
On hearing the sound of firing, the police personnel present in the barracks rushed to the spot, where they found the constable sitting dead on a cot, with a rifle in his hand. The body of the deceased was later shifted to a mortuary for post-mortem.
He was on duty during the incident, says police official
Confirming the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), Pranav Tayal identified the deceased as Ajay Kumar Chaudhary (35), who hailed from Jaipur, Rajasthan. He was posted at TML, since June 12, last year.
The DCP said, “A PCR call at around 4.31 pm was received at Chanakyapuri police station that a constable named as Ajay has shot himself with his rifle. On receipt of the PCR call, the police reached TML police line where constable Ajay Kumar Chaudhary was found dead in a sitting position on a cot.
“He was found dead in barrack No.2 with a gun shot on his forehead and holding an Insas rifle with his hands. He was issued the Insas rifle to perform his duty. He was on duty from 2 pm,” said DCP Tayal.
According to the eyewitnesses present inside the barrack, they heard the sound of fire and saw that Ajay was injured.
The scene of crime was being inspected by the crime team including forensics. The weapon was seized and an inquest proceeding has been initiated to investigate the incident. The police is trying to ascertain reason behind the incident.
